The extractive industry in Malawi has the potential to bring much-needed resources to the country and facilitate development. However, this cannot come at the expense of those communities where mining activities take place.

This project aims to empower communities to hold companies to account when their activities cause loss and damage, and to their commitments for compensation and development investment. At the same time, it advocates for an industry that is well regulated and runs for the benefit of all Malawians.

Overall goal

The overall objective is to contribute towards transparency and accountability on issues of compensation and to encourage effective corporate social responsibility by mining companies in Chombe, Mchenga, and Kaziwiziwi in Rumphi and Kanyika in Mzimba districts.

Specific objectives

  1. Communities are knowledgeable of their human rights, especially mining law, land rights, and are able to exercise and claim them.
  2. Local structures are strengthened and functional to engage in mining companies on their corporate social responsibilities and compensations.
  3. Advocacy efforts are strengthened and supported to ensure that communities affected by mining activities are properly compensated.
